PRECONCEPTION

A social photography project, by Nichola Hanson-Jones that seeks to push our preconceptions around disability and photography. Meet the photographers below.

An Image of a woman, who is looking at the photographer. She is holding a camera in one hand and using a crutch in the other.
Nicola's interest in disability and photography are both personal and professional. She has a spinal injury that limits her mobility, and has been registered as disabled for 18yrs. While at university Nicola became increasingly aware that there were very few disabled photographers both within the higher education system and the wider world of Art and photography. Nicola say’s it was this limited view of other people with disabilities in these areas that formed the basis for the project. Nicola has a love of portraiture, but until setting out on this journey she had predominantly worked in a studio setting, so she say’s that the project was not just about meeting other photographers who identify as disabled, but it was also about pushing her own personal boundaries.
